Working to raise school retention rates and to help chldren to improve upon their school performance
A recent survery carried out in the communities neighbouring Salem revealed that difficulties in accessing education are of major concern for the majority of people. Many children go to school without breafast. There is no lunch provided at school either. Coupled with a lack of pens and exercise books and school uniform the children are easily discouraged from learning.
Most drop out of school after only three or four years of education and only 15 – 20% of those entering school go on to complete primary leaving exams. Even fewer go on to study at secondary school or to acquire vocational based training. The population surrounding Salem Uganda consequently does not have the knowledge or the means to raise themselves out of hardship and remain in a state of chronic poverty.
From the 1st term of January 2009, Salem Uganda is implementing the Tusome Project. Eligible children will receive help to enable them to attend school. They will be provided with exercise books, pens and pencils, uniforms and food. In addition, some teaching materials ( mainly stationary items and soap) will be purchased also. The project will be closely monitored with school attendance and performance at school forming key baseline indicators.
We would be very pleased to receive your donation toward the costs of this project.
