After humble beginnings way in 1989, Salem Nursery School has moved from cramped conditions into a new three classroom building. This, together with the construction of a pit latrine for the school was made possible through the generous support of Tukolere Wamu (a German NGO that supports Salem in a variety of projects). A kitchen will be added soon.
Three well built and brightly decorated classrooms cater for the baby’s class (3 to 4 yr olds), middle class (4 to 5 yrs) and the top class (5 to 6 yrs) respectively. Children come from staff families our Salem Children’s Home and from our local community. Last year a total of 60 children attended. This year numbers we are planning for maximum of 75 children. There are three teachers, including the headteacher, Asha.
The official Inauguration Ceremony for the new Nursery School buildings was held in February this year. Traute Grabosch, the chief donor, officially declared the new facilities open. While she was here she was very involved in training the teachers and helping to organise the play materials that she had donated.
The District Education Officer for Mbale was the guest of honour and he encouraged Salem Uganda to apply for registration of the school so that it is officially recognised. He commented that “…it is humbling to know that even though children in Germany had contributed to this facility, but the whole of the District Education Office has not contributed anything.”
